Albania has become massively popular with tourists the last few years, ranking as the third-fastest growing tourism destination globally in 2023. 

But because this destination is new and so many stereotypes unfortunately persist, many travelers still have Albania safety questions – is Tirana safe? Is Albania safe for women?

As Albania’s first-ever ethnocultural center teaching foreigners about our heritage through an immersive evening show where you get to learn all about the warmth and hospitality of Albanian culture, we wrote this blog to cover everything you need to know about Tirana safety and how safe Albania is in 2025 in general, giving you tips on how to stay safe in the capital and beyond.

Is Albania Safe?

100% yes. Albania, and its capital, are very safe travel destinations.

Even petty crime is exceedingly rare in Tirana, with violent crime towards foreigners practically unheard of. Locals here are generally warm and welcoming, and with the government investing heavily in the touristic infrastructure, the entire country is eager to welcome visitors and ensure they have a good time in this corner of the Balkans.

Tirana is mostly well-lit and is considered by many to be the safest capital in the Balkans. In fact, Albania had one of the lowest crime rates in Europe in 2023, according to Eurostat data, with significantly fewer violent crimes than most EU countries.

But just as you would follow basic travel safety advice anytime you travel, make sure to keep these travel safety tips in mind:

• Avoid leaving valuables unattended in cafes or taxis (though you may find that if you forget something, a waiter or driver will hold on to them for you, waiting for you to return!)
• Albania is extremely safe, but always make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and what’s going on around you
• Write down or memorize emergency services phone numbers – dial 129 for the police, 128 for the fire department and 127 for an ambulance
• If you’re staying in a hostel or other places where people can access your belongings, lock up your valuables with a strong lock
• Keep digital copies of important documents in case you lose them

The rule of thumb is the same as anywhere else: use common sense, and you’ll be just fine!

 

Is Albania Safe for Women?

Albania has been called by many solo female travel bloggers an extremely safe and hospitable destination. Foreign female travelers here report traveling alone through Tirana, the mountain villages as well as the coast as problem and danger free. 

Albanians are generally respectful towards foreigners, especially towards women. Sexual assault and violence towards female travelers are thankfully almost unheard of in Albania.

Catcalling is rare here, far less aggressive than in other European countries. The strong hospitality culture means that locals often want to help, rather than harass, and people here dress very casually. There are no strict clothing requirements, though, of course, it’s best to always read the room and notice the reactions from locals as you make your way through the country. 

Again – use common sense and trust your instincts. Women freely walk alone at night in Tirana, and the villages and rural areas are considered likewise very safe for solo female travelers. If you don’t feel comfortable walking around alone at night, we recommend taking a taxi or the bus (bus fare in Tirana is 40 ALL).

 

Taxis in Tirana and Albania

It’s very safe to take a street taxi in Tirana. You can hail taxis in Albania from the street with no worries about safety. There have, however, been instances of taxi drivers sometimes taking advantage of foreigners who don’t know the distance between destinations & overcharging clients.

We recommend downloading Patoko, Albania’s version of Uber, where you can order a cab ahead of time and see prices before confirming. This way, you know exactly how much you’ll pay before getting into the cab.

 

What’s the Most Dangerous Thing in Albania?

The most dangerous thing to keep an eye out for in Albania are shepherd dogs. If you are hiking in the mountains or walking through remote villages and hear the telltale tinkling of a cowbell or the bleating of goats and sheep, be very careful – an Albanian guard dog may be nearby.

These dogs have spiked collars around their necks to protect them from wolves, who they’ve been trained to kill. They can be very aggressive and have been known to attack people who get too close to their flock. If the shepherd is around, he will call off the dog. 

We recommend hiking in the wilderness with a group or an experienced guide. The Albanian Alps and the countryside are magnificent, and you are going to fall in love with the country’s natural beauty. The guard dogs will stay close to the animals they’re taking care of, so if you hear one barking at you from afar, simply go the other way!

If you stay in Tirana, the cities or even if you’re in a group, you won’t run into this problem. 

And of course, whenever hiking, make sure to check weather conditions ahead of time and pack plenty of water and snacks. Follow trails and use a reliable app to avoid getting lost.
