Those looking for how to plan a one or two day Durrës itinerary can check out our previous blog post, where we did a deep dive into the city’s best historical sights and beaches.

In this post, we’ll give you the insider’s scoop on the best beaches, historical sights and attractions in Durrës county – what to do on a day trip from Durrës and how to enjoy central Albania’s most beautiful sites.

Our top recommendation for where to stay in this area is Lalzi Bay (Gjiri i Lalzit), a slightly more upscale and exclusive spot that offers premium accommodation options as well as wide, clean sandy beaches with plenty of shallow areas that are perfect for families with young children. This area of central Albania offers easy access to plenty of beautiful beaches and local attractions.

1. Visit the Cape of Rodon & Skanderbeg Castle

The first attraction you’ll want to hit is Kepi i Rodonit (the Cape of Rodon). This rocky peninsula is a cape extending into the Adriatic Sea just fifty minutes north of Lalzi.

Renowned Albanian archeologists and researchers link the etymology of the name with Illyrian pagan mythology. The Illyrian god of the sea was called Redon, a god similar to the Greek and Roman mythology gods, Poseidon and Neptune. Apart from this etymologic background that adds to the curiosity of the ancient site, the Cape of Rodon is also home to a church and midlevel castle that have been preserved magnificently. The cape is a great spot to enjoy the beach and hiking. The cape can be accessed 24/7 – read more about it in our previous Durrës post.

At the cape, you’ll have the chance to discover the Rodon Castle, built by Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg after the victorious First Siege of Krujë. The League of Lezhë decided to increase the fortifications for use against the Ottoman Empire and chose the Cape as its location, commencing construction in 1450. The walls of the castle were completed around 1452 and had a length of 400 meters (1,300 ft). Today, visitors can see the outer walls on the right side and the tower where the two intersect.

St. Anthony's Church in Cape of Rodon

The nearby St. Anthony’s Church is likewise a special spot in a beautiful area. Originally a Byzantine Monastery from 1418, it got a new look with Romanesque-Gothic style and later was dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. Recently renovated with support from the European Union, visitors can enjoy the depictions on the church walls of a Stradioti (15th century Balkan mercenary) on a horse, a picture of Mamica, the sister of Albania’s hero Skanderbeg, and a double-headed eagle. In other parts of the church walls lie intricate frescos.

The bars, restaurants and premium resorts all contribute to the peaceful ambience of this slice of the Adriatic coast. Completed in the 15th century, the castle has been declared a cultural monument and possesses four towers, one in each corner. Its clock tower was erected sometime in the early nineteenth century.
