Travel isn’t always cheap, with expenses from hotels to excursions to eating out quickly piling up for many tourists.

1. Discover Albanian Craftsmanship at Albanian Bazaar
Tirana’s newest tourist attraction is Albanian Night, a cultural center next to Skanderbeg Square that is also home to the region’s largest artisanal souvenir shop. Here, you can learn all about the traditional methods artisans have used to craft beautiful souvenirs, with LED displays showcasing interviews and staff happy to explain different product features. You can visit this bazaar every day from 09:00 – 22:00 for free (and if you want a deeper dive into Albanian culture, they also have a show every evening at 19:00 you can check out!).
2. People Watch in Skanderbeg Square
A large, open plaza with marble brought from all over the different corners of the country, Skanderbeg Square is a great spot to people watch and soak up the local culture. This area is also home to the iconic museum mosaic portraying Albania in Socialist Realism fashion, as well as other notable historical landmarks like the Et’hem Bej Mosque. There are often free events going on here; the easiest way to find out about them is to ask locals or see if they’re setting up a stage. 3. Discover Unique, Local Street Art
Tirana is home to some unique graffiti and street art, most notably Rruga Pjetër Bogdani in Blloku and the surrounding side streets, where you’ll find large murals and creative graffiti pieces tucked between cafes, apartments and bars. Another great area is around Pazari i Ri, where colorful murals decorate the buildings near the market. Take a walk along Rruga Hoxha Tahsin and nearby streets to spot smaller works hidden among shops and local businesses. Myslym Shyri, a famous commercial street in the heart of Tirana, is also a great spot for finding murals.
4. Dive Headfirst Into Nature at the Grand Park
Tirana’s Grand Park is a massive green space just south of the city center that’s completely free to visit. Centered around the Artificial Lake of Tirana, the park is a popular place for locals to walk, jog or just relax away from the busy streets of the capital. You’ll find plenty of shaded paths, scenic viewpoints along the lake, and open areas where families and friends gather for picnics, especially during the warmer months. If you’re looking for a quiet break from the city without spending a cent, this is one of the best spots in Tirana to do it.
5. Watch the Sunset from the Pyramid of Tirana
One of the best places to watch the sunset in Tirana is the Pyramid, a former museum and monument dedicated to the dictator of Albania, Enver Hoxha. This complex has been converted in recent years to an open-air park of sorts that houses cafes, youth initiatives, festivals and events throughout the year. You can climb up to its top to watch the sun setting behind the canopy of trees lining the Lana River and take in the beautiful views of the eclectic city landscape.
6. Visit Namazgah Mosque, Et’hem Bey Mosque & Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Church
Albania is home to a diverse array of religious traditions, and you should definitely visit the main places of worship on your trip to its capital. The Et’hem Bej Mosque is located in Skanderbeg Square and is home to some of the most beautiful Ottoman calligraphy and architecture in the Balkans. Namazgah Mosque, the largest mosque in all the Balkans, is a gorgeous complex that was recently constructed with help from Turkey. This place can hold up to 10,000 worshippers at a time and welcomes visitors at all times of the day.
And don’t forget the Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Church, a beautiful and modern structure in the center of Tirana that was built in 2012 and now serves as the main cathedral of the Albanian Orthodox Church. Visitors are welcome to step inside for free to admire the impressive dome, detailed iconography and peaceful interior that contrasts with the busy streets outside.
7. Take a Break at Taiwan Park
This park was constructed by the youth of Tirana, who wanted to volunteer and give back to their city (which is why in Albanian it’s also called Parku Rinia, “Youth Park”). It features plenty of grassy areas for you to relax on, as well as water fountains and a dog park. There are cafes and a monument inaugurated in 2012 to mark 100 years of Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire. This is a great spot to fall asleep under a shady tree as you explore the city.
8. Catch a Free Movie Screening or Cultural Event at The Cloud
Reja, The Cloud, is a white lattice structure located in front of the National Gallery of Arts and one of Tirana’s most recognizable modern installations. Originally designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, this structure often hosts free cultural events, including movie screenings, exhibitions and public performances throughout the year. Even when nothing is scheduled, it’s still worth stopping by to walk through the geometric structure and take a few photos in one of the city’s most interesting public spaces.
9. Gawk at Antiques and Merchants in Pazari i Ri
Pazari i Ri, the New Bazaar, is one of the most colorful and lively areas in Tirana. While many visitors come here to eat at the surrounding restaurants, simply walking through the market area is an experience in itself. You’ll find merchants selling antiques, handmade crafts, fresh produce and local goods, all set among the beautifully restored buildings that give the neighborhood its distinctive charm.
