The best time to visit Albania to admire its waterfalls’ natural beauty is during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October), when meltwater and increased rainfall lead to powerful, full-flowing falls. Some of the waterfalls Albania has are as tall as 100 meters, and many of them involve short hikes or easy drives from Tirana.

1. Shëngjergj Waterfall

1 Hour Drive | 20 Minute Hike | 30 Meters Tall

Near the idyllic village of Shëngjergj, just over an hour drive away from Tirana, lies one of Albania’s most famous and gorgeous waterfalls: Ujëvara e Shën Gjergjit. The trailhead to this waterfall starts by a small restaurant, and the walk to the shallow pools it offers is a scenic trek through nature that can’t be missed. The area around the waterfall is clean, quiet and not overly crowded, making it perfect for a relaxing stop or a picnic

 

2. Kakunja (Askolaj) Waterfall

45-60 Minutes | 45 Minute Hike | 8 Meters Tall

Head to Kakunj, a quiet village set in the suburbs of Tirana in the Baldushk region. From the village, you’ll hike 45 minutes (give or take) to this picturesque and quaint waterfall that hasn’t yet been discovered by throngs of tourists. The pools from the waterfall offer plenty of intimate places to relax in nature or explore.

 

3. Sotira Waterfall

2 Hour Drive | 45 Minute Hike | 100 Meters Tall

Fed by the streams of Mount Tomorr near the village of Gramsh, Sotira Waterfall is one of Albania’s tallest and most impressive cascades. Dropping nearly 100 meters over jagged limestone cliffs, it’s especially stunning in spring when the snowmelt powers its flow. The hike to the waterfall takes you through meadows and forested paths, with incredible views along the way, making the journey as rewarding as the destination. The thundering sound of the falls and the mist that fills the air create a truly magical experience! This is one of our favorite Albanian waterfalls.

 

4. Selca Waterfall (Ujëvara e Selcës)

3.5 Hour Drive | 30 Minute Hike | 30+ Meters Tall

Best visited during a trip to the north, Selca Waterfall is a towering cascade surrounded by pristine nature and small mountain villages. The waterfall plunges over 30 meters into a turquoise pool, creating a breathtaking scene, especially in the spring when water levels are highest. The short hike to reach it passes through meadows and rural landscapes, giving visitors a taste of authentic Albanian countryside life. We definitely recommend checking this waterfall out if you’re planning to cross the border to Montenegro or to explore northern Albania!

 

5. Bogova Waterfall

1.5-2 Hours | 20 Minute Walk | 20 Meters Tall

Near the village of Bogovë, this waterfall is perfect for those who want a leisurely and easy stroll through nature before arriving at a wonderful combination of colors that please the eye and calm the senses. The water here is crystal clear and icy cold, flowing through a shaded forest area that makes for a pleasant walk. If you’re exploring Berat and its wine country surroundings, definitely take some time to relax in this breathtaking cascade just over an hour away from Berat.

 

6. Grunas Waterfall (Theth)

3 Hours | 30-40 Minute Walk | 30 Meters Tall

Considered one of the top tourist attractions in Theth, Grunas is an incredible waterfall that effortlessly catches the sunlight throughout the day to create magical rainbows in the late afternoons. This thirty-meter-tall waterfall is easily accessible from the village of Theth via a beautiful and relaxing walk through the village, on a well-worn path, and offers you the opportunity to wade in its icy cold waters and reconnect with the natural beauty of the Albanian Alps.

 

7. Rrogami (Valbona) Waterfall

5 Hour Drive | 1 Hour Hike | 30+ Meters Tall

Deep in the heart of Valbona Valley National Park, near the village of Rrogam, this waterfall tumbles dramatically down rocky cliffs surrounded by alpine forests. The hike to the falls is steep but rewarding, taking about an hour through some of the most stunning scenery in northern Albania. At over 30 meters tall, the cascade is at its most powerful in spring and early summer, though the setting remains breathtaking year-round. For those venturing to northern Albania, Rrogami Waterfall is a must-see highlight that captures the wild beauty of the Albanian Alps.
